Healing Back Pain through Ayurveda

Most of us would have suffered from back pain at some point of time .Back pain has become a common disease among both young and old generations. In this hectic life that we are living today, back pain is becoming a lifestyle disease along with diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Mostly back pain isn’t caused due to any underlying serious health conditions. The long working hours, travels, lifting weights, sudden twist and turn, poor posture can all be the reason behind back pain.  In most cases back pain subsides within a few days of taking ample rest and does not require any special treatments. If the back pain persists for more days, then it requires proper treatment to be taken to get it cured.

The common spinal disorder that causes back pain

  1. Muscle or ligament strain – This condition is caused due to frequent lifting of weights or rapid movements. These can cause strain on the back muscles and spinal ligaments which triggers the pain.

  2. Bulging or ruptured disks – Disks are situated between the spinal vertebrae which gives them a cushioning effect. The disks may bulge or rupture and press the nerves causing pain at the back

  3. Arthritis – Spinal arthritis is caused by the inflammation of spinal joints causing severe pain at the back.

  4. Spondylolisthesis – This occurs when one vertebra slips forward or backward from the line of spine causing severe lower back pain.

  5. Skeletal irregularities – This is a condition when the spine may at times curve to the side causing severe back pain.

  6. Osteoporosis – When the bones become porus and overtly brittle, there are chances for compression fracture of the spinal vertebrae. This may result in severe back pain.

The science of Ayurveda has proven its magical power in curing multitude of diseases from ages. Ayurveda has gained extreme popularity for back pain related treatment across the globe. According to Ayurveda, diseases can be classified into two – Nija and Aganthu. Aganthu rogas are diseases caused by infections as well as accidents and falls, fractures etc., whereas Nija rogas are caused due to vitiated doshas, the Vatha, Pitha and Kapha which are called the Tridhoshas. Panchakarma Chikitsa is a treatment intended to pacify the diseases caused by the Tridhoshas. Panchakarma is the most renowned treatment for back pain in Ayurveda. Panchakarma is a combination of five theraupic modalities namely Vamana, Virechana, Nasya, Vasthi, Raktha moksha.

Vamana – Vamana karma is the procedure of medicated emesis in the Panchakarma Chikista. This is to eliminate the Kapha toxins in the body. Vamana karma is helpful for curing Kapha rogas such as sinusitis, bronchitis, asthma and many more.

Virechana – Virechana karma is done to remove the diseases caused due to the vitiation of Pitta doshas in the body. The karma is done in judgement with the type of disease and the tolerance of the patient. This theraupic purgation is done mainly for skin disease like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune diseases and different types of malignancies like pancreatic, oesophageal, stomach and colorectal cancer.

Vasthi – Vasthi karma is considered as the mother of all treatments. According to Ayurveda, Vasthi Karma has the power to clean toxins caused by all the three doshas and balance the doshas. The therapy involves the administration of oils, emulsions of oil, fats and  herbals decoctions are given as enema which cleanses the colon and increases the muscle tone. Vasthi is done for a period of 8, 15 or 30 days depending on the intensity of disease and the health condition of the patient. Vasthi is effective for all types of spinal disorders like sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, spondylosis, osteoarthritis, intraverteral disk prolapse etc.

Nasya – Nasyam is the procedure of theraupic administration of oils and herbs through the nose. Nasyam is intended for diseases related to the head and neck.

Rakthamooksha – Rakthamooksha is the procedure in Panchakarma for blood purification. Blood is removed in small quantities in a controlled fashion so as to remove all the accumulated Pitta toxins from the body.

Of all these above Panchakarma therapies, Vasthi is considered to be the best treatment for spinal disorders and back pain. Within Vasthi, a unique herbal treatment called Kadi Vasthi is performed by holding herbal oil within an herbal paste boundary for about 30- 40 minutes over the lower back. This is an effective method for relieving acute back pain and helps maintain the spinal curves.
